SomaSlab™

The ‘Somatype’ range has expanded further with this latest addition to the collection, titled SomaSlab. Anglepoise™

With initial thoughts of creating something tubular, I had in the back of my mind the kind of contemporary chrome furniture that became ubiquitous throughout the 60s and that concept remained with me throughout the development process.

The font-styling idea worked out very well in this case, resulting in plenty of optional character variations for my chosen theme, most of which are included in both styles in light and bold character sets.

On completion, I decided that the title ‘Anglepoise’ represented it perfectly, so Immediately checked to see if the name was taken. Happily it wasn't, but while looking up the word online and in the dictionary, I was surprised NOT to find it listed in either place as a singular word, particularly as it’s a well accepted term that’s been in constant use for as long as I can recall, especially in design circles. SomaSkript

SomaSkript is a natural extension to the basic Somatype font design, adding a wider variety to the family, all of which have similar features. Basically, by widening the uprights and maintaining the thin cross-bars it takes on more of a script-like quality, hence the name. Slanting the letters reinforces the script illusion and consequently brings a wider application to the font’s original format.

Origami Incised™

Once I set on the concept for this ‘Origami’ inspired font, I used an imaginary strip of folded paper as the basis for each character, the folded effect being realized fully by incorporating an incised line. Of course the folded paper aspect is just a two dimensional illusion but subconsciously, will automatically be interpreted three dimensionally. There are numerous options for creating alternative characters following this logic, as the centuries-old Origami tradition itself illustrates quite clearly, but I wanted to maintain an ordered sense of style and balance throughout the full character set, so avoided any unnecessary flourishes, staying true to the Japanese ethos and spirit.
